Army clinic 4: Defenders of Titan

As Make War Not Love is around the corner, I asked local players if they wanted me to have a look at their list and discuss how it could be improved. Interest could have been greater, but I got some lists, one of which I am going to work on today. As you might have guessed from the title, we are talking Grey Knights here. Formerly the great boogeyman of 40k, the reception of their new codex was rather lukewarm, but they still have some punch. So here is the starting list (2000 points).

Librarian: Mastery level 3, Warding Stave, Warlord: 135 points

10 Purifiers: 2 Incinerators, 2 Psycannons: 290 points

10 Grey Knights in a Strike Squad: 1 Incinerator, 1 Psycannon: 230 points

10 Terminators: 2 Psycannons, Land Raider Redeemer: 610 points

Stormraven Gunship: Twin-linked Multi-Melta, Twin-linked Lascannon: 200 points

Nemesis Dreadknight: Personal Teleporter, Gatling Psilencer, Heavy Psycannon: 225 points

Nemesis Dreadknight: Personal Teleporter, Gatling Psilencer, Heavy Psycannon: 225 points

Skyshield Landing Pad: Ready for Takeoff: 80 points

This is the classic case of a skew list, finding one strong point, in this case high armour and high strength hitting power, and emphasizing that strength as much as possible. This list has four heavy hitters with the Terminators and their Land Raider, the double Knights and the Stormraven starting on the table. However, all this power comes at a price and in an army paying a premium for everything such as Grey Knights, this hurts you double. I guess that is the reason why the Strike Team has an Incinerator instead of the second Psycannon and why the Librarian does not have any wargear. There is also a distinct lack of transports which I am not too fond of, though I think it is a question of not having the model. Finally, the Landing Pad is a nice gimmick, but I dislike the fact that it only allows the Storm Raven to hover for the first round, which means that the opponent has one or even two rounds of shooting on it before it can fly. And even with the 4+ save granted by the Skyshield, it is rather vulnerable.

So, how could one change this?

First option: the radical cut

Well, I like the Dreadknights and the Land Raider, but not the Storm Raven with Landing Pad. So why not cut that? This gives us 280 points to play with. So we could add a Rhino to the Purifiers (they can still all get in when combat-squading) to get them within Cleansing Flame range by turn 2. I would also add a Nemesis Daemonhammer to each unit (2 to the Terminators) to have some melee punch. Then add some Wargear to the Librarian, namely the Domina Liber Daemonica to help him cast his spells, as well as supporting the Purifiers nearby when casting Cleansing Flame. Then replace the Strike Squad’s Incinerator with a Psycannon because it rocks. I would also replace the Psilencers on the Dreadknight with Heavy Incinerators because it is cheaper and it is better at killing infantry.

This would leave you with 195 points, so it would be a good time to add some infantry, perhaps another Strike Squad or Terminator Squad with a Psycannon.

Librarian: Mastery level 3, Warding Stave, Warlord, Domina Liber Daemonica: 160 points

10 Purifiers: 1 Daemonhammer, 2 Incinerators, 2 Psycannons, Rhino: 335 points

10 Grey Knights in a Strike Squad: Daemonhammer, 2 Psycannons: 250 points

10 Terminators:1 Daemonhammer, 2 Psycannons, Land Raider Redeemer: 620 points

5 Terminators: 1 Daemonhammer, 1 Psycannon: 195 points

Nemesis Dreadknight: Personal Teleporter, Heavy Incinerator, Heavy Psycannon: 215 points

Nemesis Dreadknight: Personal Teleporter, Gatling Psilencer, Heavy Psycannon: 215 points

Second option: slightly less radical

One could of course also just cut the Skyshield and leave in the Storm Raven. Those 80 points could buy you the upgrades above, just not a second Strike Squad. That would give us:

Librarian: Mastery level 3, Warding Stave, Warlord, Domina Liber Daemonica: 160 points

10 Purifiers: 1 Daemonhammer, 2 Incinerators, 2 Psycannons, Rhino: 335 points

10 Grey Knights in a Strike Squad: Daemonhammer, 2 Psycannons: 250 points

10 Terminators:1 Daemonhammer, 2 Psycannons, Land Raider Redeemer: 620 points

Stormraven Gunship: Twin-linked Multi-Melta, Twin-linked Lascannon: 200 points

Nemesis Dreadknight: Personal Teleporter, Heavy Incinerator, Heavy Psycannon: 215 points

Nemesis Dreadknight: Personal Teleporter, Gatling Psilencer, Heavy Psycannon: 215 points
